Examination scoring

Written Examination

Changes to the FRANZCOG Written Examination from 2026

From 2026, candidates must pass both components of the FRANZCOG Written Examination — the Short Answer Questions (SAQ) and the Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) — in order to pass overall.

  • All candidates are required to sit both components on the same day, even if they previously failed only one component in 2025 or earlier.
  • Each candidate is permitted up to three (3) attempts at the SAQ component and three (3) attempts at the MCQ component
    • For example: if you sat the examination in January 2025 and failed, this counts as one attempt for both the SAQ and MCQ.
  • Once a candidate has passed both components (whether in the same sitting or separately), they are deemed to have passed the FRANZCOG Written Examination.

Resit rules:

  • Examinations sat in 2025 or earlier: Candidates who fail one or both components must re-sit both components in their next attempt from 2026 onwards.
  • Examinations sat in 2026 or later: Candidates who fail one or both components are only required to re-sit the failed component(s).

Examples:

  • Example 1: Delilah Holohan sat the Written Examination in July 2025, passed the SAQ but failed the MCQ. At her next attempt, she must sit both SAQ and MCQ.
  • Example 2: Fonzie Pais sat the Written Examination in February 2026, passed the SAQ but failed the MCQ. At his next attempt, he only needs to sit the MCQ.

Oral Examination

At each station, you will be assessed according to a global (holistic) scoring method, against a combination of the following domains:

History and examination

Investigations and interpreting results
Treatment/management
Clinical knowledge

Complex, urgent or unusual clinical presentations

Rapport with patient, support person and/or colleague

Respect of patient, support person and/or colleague

Communication skills

Eligibility

According to the Examinations Policy and Procedure (Section 1.8), applications to sit the examination will only be considered where the applicant has met all eligibility requirements at the closing date of registrations.

FRANZCOG Trainees will be eligibility to sit the FRANZCOG Oral examination when they meet the following criteria:

  • Credited a minimum of 66 weeks FTE of prospectively approved and satisfactory Basic Training.
  • Successfully completed the FRANZCOG written examination.

RANZCOG may limit the number of candidates accepted for the FRANZCOG Oral Examination on any occasion. Acceptance is based on the following priority order:

  • The time remaining for individual applicants to complete the requirements of the Integrated Training Program or their SIMG pathway to Fellowship as applicable; and
  • The date and time on which applications are received by RANZCOG.

Online application process

1. Submit your online Expression of Interest to sit the examination

Please see the relevant Dates and Registration section above.

All expressions of interest are subject to eligibility checking after the application closing date.

2. Eligibility checking

The eligibility criteria includes the payment of your training fee for the current year, the status of your written examination (please note, if you have not successfully completed your written examination at the time of registration, you will be deemed automatically ineligible to undertake the Oral Exam), as well as the weeks of training which you have completed at the time of registrations closing.

Once the eligibility checks have been finalised, you will receive a letter from the Examinations Team confirming your eligibility outcome to sit the examination.

This will occur within six weeks after applications have closed.

3. Pay examination fees

Upon receiving the eligibility outcome, you must pay the examination fees within seven days to finalise your examination application.

Please advise the Examinations team via email: examinations@ranzcog.edu.au if you wish to withdraw from an examination after submitting your expression of interest form, or exam payment.

Before submitting your application, please refer to the RANZCOG Regulations (see sections B4-B5 on the FRANZCOG Examinations) for more information on topics such as eligibility, availability of places and withdrawals.
